Don't confuse UN-I-SHIELD with other roof coatings!
UN-I-SHIELD is one-of-a-kind! There are other products being marketed as “coating for asphalt roof shingles.” However, those products are water-based enamel products, not petroleum-based coatings. Water-based products may be aesthetically pleasing, but they do little to the overall condition of the asphalt shingles. Why? Answer: there is no permanent reaction between the water-based product and the asphalt in the shingles. Why is that? Simply stated, “water and oil do not mix.” If you add water to a cup of oil, the water will not combine with the oil, but will instead float on top of it. Adding a water-based enamel to asphalt shingles is very similar. It may change the look but it will not enhance the functionality of the shingles.
So, you're thinking, "What makes it work?" UN-I-SHIELD ROOF COATING's proprietary ingredients serve as an "activator" or "catalyst" for a chemical reaction between the coating and the asphalt in the shingles. This reaction infuses chemically appropriate moisture (not water moisture) into the asphalt layer of the shingles. The moisture level of the asphalt shingle is critical to the shingles overall structural integrity. A dry, brittle shingle looses granules at a much higher rate. As granules fall away, the asphalt layer is exposed to possible impact and UV degradation and the end result can be extremely expensive for the property owner. The secondary reaction creates a permanent bond between the shingles and the granules which means granule loss ceases and UV protection is increased in some cases (depending on color). "Is my roof a good candidate for UN-I-SHIELD?"
Of course, not all asphalt shingle roofs will be good candidates for coating and some may need to undergo a complete re-roof. If the roof is simply leaking, missing a few shingles, has rotten decking, and/or is beginning to lose granules it would be a candidate for a coating after any needed repairs are completed. Some problems associated with asphalt shingle roofs can be easily repaired at a fraction of the cost of a complete shingle tear off and shingle replacement. For example, a property owner can opt to have any missing shingles replaced and then have coating applied. If there is a roof leak, the leak itself can be repaired along with any rotten decking. The shingles would then be replaced over the repaired area and coating applied over the entire roof to give the roof a completely new appearance. Even after shingle roof repairs and coating have been completed the property owner's SAVINGS can be in the thousands of dollars as compared to a complete tear off and shingle replacement.
